Summary of the news story


Demonstrations protests against the president.

At the Iranic student day, a lot of students was protesting against the president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, because they thought he cheated in the election. The police had to fire tear gas and arrested at least two women. The student day marks the killing of three students at an anti US protest in 1953. In areas where protests were expected, all cell phone communication was blocked.

Tehran

Tehran is the capital city of Iran.
Tehran is located south of the Caspian sea.
Damavand is one of the worlds highest mountains and it is located just outside the capital.

Tehran is most famous for the Azadi tower. The Azadi tower is the symbol of Tehran and it marks the entrance to the city. The tower was constructed in 1971.


It is not difficult to get around in the town. Tehran has one of the cleanest metro systems, and has the highest nuber of busstops in Asia. Tehran has also a central train station.

The most popular dish is chelow kabab, which is a type of kebab. But Fast food is becoming more and more popular.

Iran - religion

About 98.4% of the population are Muslims, of these, 90.4% Shia Muslims and 8% Sunni Muslims. Muslim means "one who submits (to God)". They believe that there is only one God, translated in Arabic as Allah, and they are adherents of Islam.

Sunni Islam
Sunni Islam is the largest branch of Islam, comprising at least 85% of the world's 1.2 billion Muslims. They consider the Quran to be the literal word of God; it is the central religious text of Islam. Islam holds that the Quran was revealed to Muhammed by the angel Jibrīl (Gabriel) over a period of approximately 23 years. Sunni Muslims believe that everybody that is fit for leadership can be Caliph.

Shia Islam
Shia Islam is the second largest denomination of Islam, after Sunni Islam. The followers of Shia Islam are called Shi'as. Shia Muslims believe that only direct descendants of the Prophet Mohammed may be Caliphs, or imam as they call it.

Quran
Most Muslims treat paper copies of the Quran with veneration, ritually washing before reading the Quran. Respect for the written text of the Quran is an important element of religious faith by many Muslims. They believe that insulting the Quran on purpose is a form of blasphemy.

The President of Iran is Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

Unlike many other countries, in Iran the president does not have full control over the policy and the forces. They are under the control of the Supreme Leader. The President is elected to be president in four years. And the president can not lead for more than two terms in a row. The President was elected in the presidential election in 2005. He was reelected after the Iranian presidential election in 2009.
